FECO is de afkorting van First European Colour Orchestra. Het is een Europees orkest van personen met verstandelijke en lichamelijke beperkingen, opgericht in januari 2002. Doel is om via de muziek aan te tonen dat deze personen volwaardig kunnen participeren aan onze samenleving. Dit is niet in alle Europese landen even vanzelfsprekend. Er gaat een enorme kracht uit van het samen musiceren en via optredens laten zien wat je kan.
 

De oprichter is Annelies Kars van de Stichting Rolantino’s (Nederland).Haar idee werd toegejuicht door Viktorija Vitaite(oprichter van het Lithuanian National Colour Music Orchestra, het orkest van VSA Lithuania Guboja) en Jan Houweling (Drumband DMV uit Haarlem, Nederland, die om organisatorische redenen niet meer actief deelneemt). De samenwerking werd vastgelegd in een overeenkomst.

Aanvankelijk bestond het orkest uit 80 leden. In 2003 sloten muzikanten uit België en Polen aan, daarna ook uit Letland en Hongarije. Momenteel zijn dus zes Europese landen betrokken bij FECO. De muzikanten worden ondersteund door talrijke begeleiders en vrijwilligers.
 

FECO haalt zijn leden hoofdzakelijk uit bestaande nationale muziekgroepen. Begin 2009 telde het orkest 81 muzikanten: 15 uit Nederland, 6 uit België, 6 uit Polen 6 uit Engeland, 14 uit Hongarije, 12 uit Duitsland, 10 uit Denemarken en 12 uit Litouwen. FECO wil uitgroeien tot een orkest van (maximaal) 150 muzikanten. Daartoe worden jaarlijks nieuwe landen uitgenodigd om aan te sluiten.

 

Dirigent van FECO is Annelies Kars. Zij is tevens dirigent van de Rolantino's en de Erkertjes. Zij studeerde accordeon, piano en orgel.

Een Europees orkest moet kunnen repeteren, een eigen repertoire uitbouwen en via optredens het resultaat tonen aan een ruim publiek. Daartoe wordt jaarlijks een muziekkamp georganiseerd. De opzet is dat ieder jaar een ander land gastland is voor het orkest. Dit gastland financiert en organiseert het verblijf, de repetities en optredens van FECO, de deelnemende landen financieren hun verplaatsing naar het gastland. FECO staat dus voor een puur niet-commercieel opzet.

In mei 2006 was België aan de beurt. Organisator is Het GielsBos te Gierle, een woongemeenschap voor personen met ernstige verstandelijke beperkingen, die deel uitmaakt van de Stichting Gouverneur Kinsbergen – Gehandicaptenzorg Provincie Antwerpen vzw. Zij hebben een bijzonder programma in mekaar gestoken op een unieke locatie: kwaliteit staat daarbij voorop, maar ook verbondenheid. Aan dit muziekkamp zullen 150 personen (muzikanten én begeleiders) deelnemen. Daarna volgt een geweldig goed georganiseerd festival in Hongarije. In 2008 was het voor Letland onmogelijk om dit festival te organiseren vanwege te weinig sponsorgelden. In 2009 was Nederland het gastland met als dirigent Annelies Kars. Het Festival was een groot succes evenals de beide concerten.

Vanwege de economische situatie was het in 2010 voor polen onmogelijk het Festival te organiseren en verschoven zij dit naar 2011. Helaas werd het instituut gesloten en de muziekgroep opgeheven. Stichting Rolantino's (Nederland) organiseerde toen wederom het Festival, daar zo'n uniek project niet verloren mag gaan.

We hopen dat Duitsland in 2013 het Festival kan organiseren want ook in 2012 zijn er geen mogelijkheden.

De muziek van FECO wordt geschreven door Annelies Kars of medewerkers uit de deelnemende landen. De partituren worden door haar verstuurd naar de leden zodat zij deze thuis kunnen inoefenen. Ieder land levert zijn bijdrage aan FECO: sommigen spelen alleen akkoorden, anderen spelen alleen percussie of zang, en nog anderen spelen de melodie. Gedurende de gezamenlijke repetities van FECO brengt de dirigent Romas Bruzga alle stemmen en geluiden samen tot een harmonisch geheel, en geloof ons, hij doet dit fantastisch!

FECO is the abbreviation of First European Colour Orchestra. It is a European orchestra of people with intellectual and physical disabilities, founded in January 2002. Its purpose is to show, through the medium of music, that these people can be valuable members of society. This is not so obvious in every European country. An enormous power emanates from making music together and from performing together and showing what you can accomplish.

FECO's founder is Annelies Kars of the foundation Rolantino's (The Netherlands). Her idea was welcomed by Viktorija Vitaite (founder of the Lithuanian National Colour Music Orchestra, the orchestra of VSA Lithuania Guboja) and Jan Houweling (Drumband DMW in Haarlem, The Netherlands, who, for organizational reasons cannot actively participate any longer). The collaboration was formalized in an agreement.

 

The first year, the orchestra had just 80 members. In 2003, musicians from Belgium and Poland and later people from Latvia and Hungary joined in. At the moment, FECO has members in six countries. The musicians are supported by numerous professional assistants and volunteers.


FECO finds its members mainly in existing national music groups. In the beginning of 2009 the orchestra consisting in 81 musiciens: 15 from the Netherlands, 6 from Belgium, 6 from England, 14 from Hungary, 12 from Germany, 10 from Denemark and 12 from Lithuania.   FECO aims to become an orchestra of (max) 150 musicians. Yearly, new countries are invited to join.

A European orchestra must be able to rehearse, to build its own repertoire and must be able to show its achievements to the public. That is why a music camp is organized, each year by another host country. The host country will finance and organize the accommodations, the rehearsals and the performances of FECO. The participants finance their costs of travel to the host country. FECO is purely non-profit.

In May, 2006, its Belgium's turn. The host organization is Het GielsBos in Gierle, a residence for people with profound intellectual disabilities, part of the foundation Stichting Gouverneur Kinsbergen - Gehandicaptenzorg Provincie Antwerpen vzw. They have put together a special programme at a unique location: quality is a priority, but also togetherness. 150 people will participate in this music camp (musicians and their assistants).
 

Because of the economical situation it was impossible for Poland to organize the festival in 2010 and they moved it to May  2011. Unfortunately the Institution was closed and their was no possibility to keep the music group going on.  Stichting Rolantino's (Netherlands) organized therefor the Festival again, because such a unique project shouldn't be lost.

We hope Germany will be able to organize the Festival in 2013 because they also have no possibilities in 2012.

FECO's music is written by Annelies Kars or by people from the participating countries. She sends the scores to the participants so they can practice at home. Each country makes its own contribution to FECO: some just play the chords, some play percussion or sing, others play the melody. During the orchestra's rehearsals (when all participants are present), conductor Annelies Kars joins all of these voices and sounds into a harmony. And, she does a fantastic job!
